Metric System. quarts? gallons? inches?, yards? miles?, pints?. Does any of this make any sense? I don’t think so.When I was a kid over 35 years ago, the elementary school was trying to get us to learn metric system. 35 years later and the only people that use the metric system are the local drug dealers who sell their products by the gram, and grocery store items. So I guess you can say that over the last 35 years in the US, the only things that converted to metric is “Coke”. And while it may be true that things go better with Coke, why can’t the US convert to metrics?Elementary schools should start teaching metric. Students must know metrics before they graduate to junior high school. The whole country should eventually be forced to learn it. Highways should convert to kilometers from miles. Someone should come up with an easy to understand conversion. We need to start now and make a date when the country is to be fully converted. We should institute a national policy. If Europe can launch a new currency, can’t we launch a conversion to a much smarter and more logical method of weights and measures? I think so.

Auto Side View Mirrors. Side view mirrors are bad. There are blind spots. In tight spots, they get hit and break off. They are not easy to see in bad weather. They require you to take your eyes off the road. Cameras should be mounted in lieu of mirrors and shine the view(s) on the windshield or dashboard. Some cars already have cameras which help you when backing up by showing what’s behind you. But this should go much further. Having multiple images on your windshield would be a real improvement to current rear and side view mirrors. And this camera technology can help in other ways too. Images can possibly be stored somehow, and help in theft prevention of the car, and prove liability in accidents.

Vitamins and the FDA. I don’t understand why the FDA doesn’t regulate the vitamin or homeopathic industry? You walk in to a health food store and everything sold there is un-regulated. What gives? There are doses of vitamin requirements in the supermarket on everything we eat. But not in the vitamin store? They sell stuff with false claims, unproven studies, quantities of uppers and downers and roots and whatever, without any backup at all. Basically you are walking in to a modern-day snake oil supplier when you walk in to a vitamin store or section. I want to know what I am taking is safe. How do I know? I don’t. The FDA should regulate this industry. Don’t get me wrong. I am not for more government, especially with the administration we have in office right now. But in this case I think it will help prevent accidental overdoses, and limit scandals and scams. I believe that it will help those of us that like experimenting with non-western medicines and trying new things, to feel more comfortable knowing that someone is watching our backs.

1. I do not like using disposable batteries. They are bad for the environment. I don’t like throwing batteries into the garbage, but have no idea how to recycle them.
2. And I do not like having to buy multiple sized batteries.
3. Why can’t more products use re-chargeable batteries?
4. You should be able to throw your batteries in to the mail box and let the post office deliver them to the recycling facility automatically. No packaging, etc. and better for the environment.
5. A universal battery. No more need for multiple size batteries. The way this might work is that there might be a single size battery that is modular so that if you need more power, you someow attach each of these batteries to each other.
6. What about a remote charger for your TV remote? This would allow you to keep track of your remote, as it would go into the charger after use.

Ugly Buildings. There are so many buildings that go up these days that are poorly designed. The Javits Center for instance is one of the most poorly designed buildings in NY. Not only did it leak terribly when it was built, but the building is glass and could have been designed to take advantage of unobstructed views of NJ (not great but not terrible either). But what really bothers me about this building is that it doesn’t have parking! I heard that one reason for this (as the story goes), is the people who were part of the committe for the desing of this building, included people like Jackie O. Since she probably never attended a convention, and certainly never had to park in a convention center, they never gave parking a thought. But building a convention center without parking, is like trying to house the Boat Show in a building with 8′ ceilings. Just not very practical or easy. And anyone can tell you that of all convention centers, getting in and out as an exhibitor to this building is particularly challenging. It is just not a good convention center and for the a city like NY to pale in comparison to other cities like Chicago when it comes to conventions is a costly blow. Conventions are good for a city. Building a bad convention center should never be allowed. John Portman, an Atlanta-based architect is one of the worst I have ever seen. He designed horrible buildings and each time I see a Portman building I wonder how they allowed this guy to get a license. Just look at the Marriott Marquis in NY. Clearly one of the most poorly designed catastophes and eyesores in NY. Yes, it was built at a time when Times Square was not the tourist attraction it is now. But there is no excuse for something so ugly. So fortress-like. Even the lobby is almost impossible to find. And to have a circular rotating bar upstairs in a square room is nothing short of inefficient. At least put sitting areas in the corners. You don’t have to be a brilliant architect, you just have to be logical. I think that architects should go under stricter review. Perhaps there should be a voting committee to vote on an architects work. And allow them to build certain types of buildings if they reach a certain point level. There should just be a voting of one’s peers to allow buildings to happen and prevent others from going up. Ugly and poorly laid out buildings are just too frustrating and too visible to be allowed to be built. Architects who don’t reach a certain level should not be able to build buildings above a certain height or in certain visible areas, or over a certain budget. This way if they are not good, they can’t build big, tall ugly buildings like the Javits Center or Marriott Marquis.

Improving Training Wheels for Kids’ Bikes. Why are training wheels so simple and extremely archaic? They make your child too dependent on them. The goal should be to get the child to not be scared when they are removed. Best way to do this might be to perhaps make the child unaware that they are being removed at all. Maybe they should be battery operated and use simple motor or hydrolics or something? So that as your child is going along thinking he/she is on training wheels, you can press a remote, and the training wheels start to raise up so that you can train your child to ride on two wheels? Just a though.
If I am driving by, and want to see a movie, I do not know the showtimes. They should make the marquis bigger, clearer and guaranteed to be easy to read from a passing car. Also…Single screen theaters can and should become multiplex’s by becoming digital and showing a different film every two hours. This way that same theater can show as many if not more differnt movies a week than a multiplex theater. This is great when you live near a single screen theater and want to see a movie in a theater without travelling too far see one.
